The Aim of the monthly volleyball tournaments are for students to engage in an organized and dominant structure with smaller components. There is a stated outcome of game play and available resources to support those outcomes. Students learn to interact with each other while respecting both the game and by learning the sports vocabulary.
Expectations are given before the start of each game and students learn to conduct themselves in a manner commensurate of professional athletes.
Half way through each game, time is taken to ask high level questions to students about the game of volleyball to deepen their understanding of the game. Students are grouped in teams of 3 for play and discussion about game strategy. The students themselves perform assessments and have a hand in articulating the rules.
The top winners of each tournament (24 students) receive medals to share with their families so that they can participate in the learning activities.
